Like others who've responded, I have the greatest respect for Bernard
Spolsky
as a person and for his significant work. He will be greatly missed.
I had the good fortune to cross paths with him early in my career, only 2
years
out from my Master's degree.

I was with the US Office Education (now Dept of Education), as a bilingual
specialist
in the early days of the ESEA Title VII Bilingual Education Act. Dr.
Spolsky was on faculty
at the Linguistics Department, University of New Mexico. He was also an
evaluator for
a bilingual education project I had been assigned to.

We were all working to develop the shape of the new federally funded
bilingual education
programs. I realized early on that we were fortunate to have someone of Dr.
Spolsky's
language and cultural perspective to be a part of that process, both for
general input and
specifically developing program evaluations.

And I quickly realized how fortunate I was personally and professionally to
learn from and
work with him. I then followed his continued contributions to educational
linguistics and his
advocating importantly for the role of culture.
