Center for Applied Linguistics Statement on the Executive Order Designating
English as the Official Language of the United States

The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) opposes the U.S. Presidential
Executive Order issued on March 1, 2025, which designates English as the
official language of the United States. This action rescinds President
Clinton’s Executive Order 13166 of August 11, 2000, Improving Access to
Services for Persons with Limited English Proficiency and ignores a long
American tradition of multilingualism.

The mission of the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) is to promote
language learning and cultural understanding by serving as a trusted source
for research, resources, and policy analysis. Through its work, CAL seeks
solutions to issues involving language and culture as they relate to access
and equity in education and society around the globe.
