[Edling] Fwd: Writing systems as technologies for mathematics education

Apologies for any cross-posting.

I am a researcher with a background in anthropology, communications, and
linguistics. My work analyzes the intersection of language and mathematics,
focusing on the discursive and semiotic structures in student answers from
Brazil’s national public-school math competitions (OBMEP). I have been
researching this subject since 2011.

Although I am not a mathematician, my doctoral research initiated a
dialogue with educators that now motivates a formal effort to link
mathematics and Portuguese through shared practices of counting and
sequential order. Both in language, when structuring a paragraph, and in
mathematics, when following numbering patterns, sequential order is
essential; however, while in mathematics it is evaluated for formal
correctness, in language it is evaluated for coherence and sense-making.
