Yesterday, Candida Drummond was cited as having said that ALEM in Brazil
is/was an organization created ar SIL's image and that they even "echange"
members. I received messages off-list asking about who she is. For those
who asked, Marilia Lopes was so kind to send me this reference. I hope
Portuguese is understandable for most of you. At any rate, the point is,
Candida Drummond is a serious anthropologist.

Maria Candida DRUMMOND MENDES BARROS, doutora em Ciencias Sociais
(UNICAMP, 1993)
Maria Candida Drummond Mendes Barros interessa-se pelo estudo dos casos
de acao missionaria que tem lugar atraves da utilizacao da lingua indigena
no processo da conversao. Estudou os jesuitas no quadro do periodo
colonial no Brasil ("Os linguas jesuitas e a gramatica tupi no seculo
XVI", 1995) e o Summer Institute of Linguistics na America Latina ("The
missionary presence in literacy campaigns in the indigenous languages of
Latin America, 1939-1952", 1995). Suas pesquisas mais recentes dirigem-se
sobre o papel da escritura nas linguas indigenas elaborada pelos
missionarios no curso do processo de conversao. Os instrumentos teoricos
que ela utiliza para a sua analise sao aqueles da sociolinguistica e da
historia da linguistica.
