timing issues

Does cumulative timing not work with resetting the duration of an object on the fly?  Is there any way of making this work?  I've noticed some bugs when I try and reset the object before I run the procedure it is in (it appears that sometimes the object only appears for 3ms, instead of 3 seconds).  I'd really like to be able to make this work, so any advice would be really appreciated!
