setAttrib woes

I have a procedure running from a list object. One of the attributes (the
column title) of the list object is "CorrectResp" and all of the values
(the rows in the list object) are set to 1.
I need to manually change the "CorrectResp" attribute and then display the
result in a text display within the procedure described above. What I did
was create an inline object before the text display object which contained
the line:
c.SetAttrib "CorrectResp", "NewResp"
Then in the text box I called the attribute with [CorrectResp].
Much to my dismay it displayed the number 1 from the initial list object.
The attribute had not been changed!
(Note that I do not want to change the list object itself with the
SetAttribAtSource command.)
Help would be much appreciated. There seems to be some witchcraft going on
with local and global attributes and if you could explain it I would be
grateful.
