Journal of Applied Communication Research Special Issue
Communication and Design
Submission Deadline March 15 2013
The purpose of this special issue is to promote design as a mode of scholarship in the field of communication for theorizing about design and practicing design as it relates to communication. Manuscripts are invited that address this broad purpose in any area of communication study.
Design is central to the communication discipline and to communication-related professions, but the work of designing remains largely invisible in the field’s teaching and research. Design work itself is often treated as a by-product of research rather than as a scholarly or creative act. To illustrate, this tends to be so for design work done in building effective health campaigns, design work done in trying to improve organizational processes, design work done to provide more successful methods for managing conflict, design work done to foster deliberation, design work for information systems and social media, and even design work done to achieve learning outcomes. The research literature contains many examples of studies done to evaluate the products of design, but fewer that reflect on the design process itself or the principles of design for communication. We invite you to bring your design work forward and join an effort to build design theory in all areas of communication research.
Both empirical studies and theoretical papers are desired, so long as design is a central concept. Please see the Journal of Applied Communication Research for author instructions and guidance on making submissions. Both co-editors are available for informal exploration of ideas.
