A news update from Donal Carbaugh.

Kristine Munoz was recently recogni zed with an honorary degree from the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland, for her contributions to interpersonal and intercultural communication, and her longstanding connection to the university since the 1990s. Part of that connection was her develop ment of an intercultural communication course that teamed University of Iowa students with Finnish ones to work online on group projects, a kind of virtual study abroad. This ceremony, held every four years, marked the 150 th anniversary of the Finnish university. Other honorary doctors in the group of 15 were Sauli Niinisto, president of Finland, and Markku Jokinen, former president of the World Federation of the Deaf.
Gerry Philipsen has been elected a Distinguished Scholar by the National Communication Association. The NCA Distinguished Scholar Award was created in 1991 to recognize and reward NCA members for a lifetime of scholarly achievement in the study of human communication. Recipients are selected to showcase the communication profession.
