The Laboratório de Línguas Indígenas of the University of Brasília in conjunction with the Coordination of GTLI (biennium 2004-2006) of the National Association of Graduate and Research Programs in Letters and Linguistics (Anpoll) announces the Workshop on Historical Linguistics and Language Contact: Indigenous Languages of Brazil and Adjacent Regions.

GOAL

The goal of our workshop is to discuss the results of recent studies on language contact and historical linguistics involving indigenous languages of Brazil and adjacent regions, and to consider new methodological and theoretical issues that would contribute to the development of current research projects.

Verónica Grondona (University of Michigan State)

MAIN TOPICS

       The workshop main topics are:

·       Phonological and grammatical reconstruction

·       Language contact and language change in pre-historical/historical times

·       Linguistic areas

·       The role of generations in the process of language change

·       Language contact, linguistic contraction and endangered languages

ABOUT THE SESSIONS

·       There have been planed 6 sessions of 2 hours each, 4 conferences and a final session for discussion of results.

·       Proposals of sessions should be sent to the organizing committee with the abstracts of each work.

·       Abstracts should be 400 words maximum and should include name, affiliation, and mailing address of the proponent.

·       Deadline for receipt of abstracts: June 15, 2005.

·       Notification of acceptance will be by email at July 1st, 2005.

**Part of the sessions will be dedicated to the discussion of current researches developed by members of the thematic groups of GTLI (biennium 2004-2006), which have been defined during the XIX ENANPOLL (Maceió, 28 June-2 July, 2004):

·       A fonética e a fonologia da glotalização em línguas indígenas brasileiras. Luciana Raccanello Storto (USP), Maria Filomena Spatti Sândalo (Unicamp), Didier Demolin (USP).

·       Reconstrução gramatical do Proto-Tupi. Ana Suelly Arruda Câmara Cabral (LALI-UnB), Aryon Dall’Igna Rodrigues (LALI-UnB), Ruth Maria Fonini Monserrat (UFRJ), Dulce Franceschini (UFAM), Cristina Fargetti (Univ. Metodista de Piracicaba), Dioney Moreira Gomes (LALI-UnB), and Poliana Maria Alves (LALI-UnB).

·       Comparação lingüística na família Jê. Aryon Dall’Igna Rodrigues (LALI-UnB), Wilmar da Rocha D’Angelis (UNICAMP).

·       Marcação de caso nas famílias Pano, Nambikwára e Guató. Aldir de Paula, Adair Palácio, Stella Telles e Januacele Costa.

·       Variação lingüística e estudos fonológicos, gramaticais e históricos. Marília Lopes da Costa Facó Soares (MN-UFRJ), Leopoldina Maria Souza de Araújo (UFPA).

·       Cisão de caso e hierarquia de pessoa. Maria Filomena Spatti Sândalo (UNICAMP) e Luciana Raccanello Storto (USP).

STUDENTS PARTICIPATION

The Workshop, as the previous meetings organized by the Laboratório de Línguas Indígenas, has been conceived also as a means of stimulating the interest of Brazilian graduate and undergraduate students for these areas of research.

       The workshop is sponsored by the Laboratório de Línguas Indígenas and the Department of Research and Graduate Studies of the University of Brasília.
