Dear colleagues and participants in the reduplication symposium,
Last August, our symposium "Reduplication in Amazonian languages" was
accepted by the organization of the 53rd International Congress of
Americanists (ICA), which will take place in Mexico City from 19 to 24
July 2009. This is our second call for contributions (which can be in
English, Portuguese or Spanish).
We are very pleased to announce that Prof. Bernhard Hurch of the
University of Graz in Austria has agreed to participate and present a
synthesis of the issues to be discussed at our symposium. Prof. Hurch has
been on the forefront of reduplication studies for almost a decade, and
the Graz typological database project on reduplication can be viewed at
http://reduplication.uni-graz.at/.
We have already received a number of excellent proposals, and there is
still room for others. Attached is a description of the symposium, which
can also be found on the ICA website at
http://www.53ica.com/simposios/lit/2/lit17.pdf. If you have not already
submitted a proposal to us, we encourage you to do so. We look forward to
receiving new proposals soon.
For all of you who plan to participate, you will need to send us a short
abstract (200 words or less) before 31 December so that it will be
included in the ICA program book. If we do not receive your abstract by
31 December, you can still participate, but only your name and the title
of your presentation will be in the program book.
Additional guidelines for the proposal and the short abstract are the
following:
- Text in Arial or Times New Roman 12 pt. font.
- Title limited to 18 words, centered.
- Indicate your name, institutional affiliation, e-mail address, and
country below the title.
We have also attached the second circular (in Spanish) from the Mexican
organization of the ICA. It can be found on
http://www.53ica.com/segunda%20esp.pdf. It has information about the
venue, how to register and how to pay. Here we will summarize some of the
important points. If you register and pay before 31 December, the
conference registration fee will be 150 US Dollars. If you register
later, it will be more expensive.
If you are in Mexico, you can simply pay into the account of the ICA at
the Banco Santander:
- in the name of CONGRESO INTERNACIONAL DE AMERICANISTAS
- BANCO SANTANDER
- cuenta (account number) 65-50232918-6
- the amount is 150 $ US Dollars, or 1575 $ Mexican pesos.
If you register from outside of Mexico, the organization of ICA suggests
that you transfer payment via the IXE Banco with the Bank of America in
New York:
- BANK OF AMERICA, 100 WEST 33 rd STREET, NEW YORK, N.Y. 10001, USA
- Swift number: BOFAUS3N
- ABA routing number 02600959-3
- ACC number 62905-27895
- IXE BANCO
- in the name of CONGRESO INTERNACIONAL DE AMERICANISTAS
- account number 0001367931-7 (at the IXE BANCO)
- the amount is 150 $ US Dollars
Because the procedure may vary according to the country and banking
regulations,we advise participants to inquire at their own banks about
how to transfer the registration fee. You should send confirmation of
payment by email to the treasurer of ICA at: ica53.tesoreria at gmail.com.
Remember that on the day of registration at the desk in July 2009, you
must show proof of payment of the registration fee in order to
participate in the congress.
For those participants who already sent us a preliminary abstract, you do
NOT need to submit another proposal to us, but if you would like to make
changes you can send us a new version. In case you decide not to attend
the symposium, please let us know before 1 December 2008, and we will
withdraw your proposal.
After the congress we would like to publish a special, edited volume with
articles on reduplication, based on the papers presented at the ICA
symposium. Please feel free to contact one of us if you have further
questions.
With sincere regards,
