Here's one for any of you interested in endangered language issues. Cheers, M.
Of concern for many scholars working with natural languages is the
problem of language endangerment and the related issue of fieldwork.
These themes are consistently represented at annual meetings of SSILA
(the Soc. for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas),
which convenes either with the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) or
with the American Anthropological Assoc. (AAA) in alternate years. In
recent years, the LSA has also responded to concerns about language
endangerment by sponsoring special sessions and symposia on themes
relevant to fieldwork and endangered languages, and by establishing a
Committee on Endangered Languages and their Preservation (CELP). As
this is a year in which SSILA meets with the AAA and not with the
LSA, CELP would like to encourage the submission of abstracts for
papers emphasizing reports from the field and/or endangered language
issues for the 2001 LSA in Washington to ensure the possibility of a
regular session devoted to the themes of language maintenance and
primary documentation of endangered languages. Papers introducing
novel linguistic data, or emphasising other issues associated with
fieldwork/language endangerment are especially welcome, and need not
have any special theoretical orientation. The deadline for the
submission of abstracts for the 2001 LSA is September 1.
