i didn't hear guy's talk but i would imagine he meant that ot commits you to a
particular path/solution/end-point, while variable rule analysis does not. at
least this is what i would think based on how _deterministic_ is used in the
domain of parsing, e.g. mitch marcus' deterministic model that commits you to a
particular parse once things have passed thru the buffer.
