I must agree completely with Joan's evaluation of TG's posting.
Absolutely a great posting. I find Tom's position one of the most
attractive in linguistics - one that Pike and Hockett and others argued
for convincingly as well. Language is a form-function composite (to use a
phrase of Pike's). Both the form and function parts are rich.
