Melissa Bowerman

Dear all,

I am sorry to have to report that Melissa Bowerman, a long-time
friend and colleague of many of us in Functional and Cognitive 
Linguistics, has passed away in Nijmegen.

Melissa was not only a great linguist, contributing to many
areas of linguistics including child language acquisition, language
typology and universals, and the cognitive linguistics of space and motion,
but also a warm and wonderful human being, as those of you who ever spent any
time with her will know.  Melissa was inducted into the American Academy of
Arts and Sciences about a month ago, but sadly missed the ceremony
as that is when her illness became manifest.
