Dear all,

Because this is a busy time of year, several people have asked the
facilitators to extend the nominations deadline.  We have added an extra
five days.  Please nominate yourself or others soon. We have a very tight
schedule, since the first executive meeting and the first general business
meeting will take place at the first IGALA conference. Therefore, the
schedule for nominations and elections is as follows:

April 12: Nominations due to the IGALA facilitators
April 15: On-line ballots posted
April 24: Ballots due
April 30: Results posted
May 4-7: first IGALA conference; first executive meeting and business
meeting of the organization

NOMINATION PROCEDURE

Self-nominations and nominations of others are both acceptable. If
nominating another person, please be sure she/he is willing to serve before
forwarding her/his name. All nominations must be electronically submitted to
Sara Trechter (strechter at csuchico.edu), with complete supporting materials,
by Friday, April 12, 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

Nomination packets must include:

1. The name of the nominee
2. The nominee's institutional affiliation, if any, including department or
unit, or other place of employment
3. The nominee's occupational title or descriptive phrase
4. A statement by the nominee of *no more than 250 words* indicating:
(a) the nominee's background and qualifications for the position
(b) the nominee's professional record (e.g., publications or research
interests; educational background; awards, grants, and prizes)
(c) the nominee's platform and/or goals to be achieved as an officer of the
organization; the nominee's vision of the organization's future

Any slots for which there are no nominees will be announced on Monday, April
10, and nominees for these positions will be sought at that time.

AVAILABLE POSITIONS

There are ten available positions, four in the Executive Committee and six
in the Advisory Council.

A. Executive Committee

Duties: To develop procedures to carry out the work of the organization, as
determined by policies put forward by the Advisory Council. The EC will be
assisted by standing committees, boards, and ad hoc committees as necessary.

1. President (2-year appointment, nonrenewable)

2. Vice-President/President-Elect (2-year appointment, nonrenewable)

3. Financial Officer (3 years; renewable)

4. Secretary (3 years; renewable)

Standing committees, ad hoc committees, and boards serving under the
executive committee will be established as needed by the EC after the
election. At present the following have been suggested: Conference
Committee, Journal Editorial Board. The position of Conference Chair is
appointed by the Executive Committee in conjunction with the Advisory
Council, based on an evaluation of proposed sites for the upcoming
conference. We have removed the position of Journal Editor, pending the
outcome of discussions regarding a new language and gender journal being
initiated by Sara Mills and her colleagues.

B. Advisory council

Duties: To represent the interests of particular constituencies within the
organization and to set policy for the organization, which will then be
carried out by the Executive Committee and its subcommittees. The liaison to
the EC is the chair of the Advisory Council, to be selected by the twelve
members of the AC from among its membership

Structure: Twelve members, six appointed and six elected. All slots are for
3 years (renewable), except for student slots, which are for 2 years
(renewable).

5-10. Six open seats on the Advisory Council, to be elected by the
membership.

The following seats are NOT ELECTED POSITIONS, but it may be helpful to keep
in mind what issues will be represented within the structure of the AC:

Six professional and political seats (to be appointed by the EC in
consultation with the AC).

-  A seat to represent student concerns
- A seat to represent scholars beyond academia (industry, government,
independent scholars, etc.)
- A seat to represent scholars with affiliations not in the US, UK, Canada,
Australia, New Zealand
- A seat to represent scholars working on queer (including gay, lesbian,
bisexual, transgender) issues in linguistics
- A seat to represent scholars working on languages or language varieties
whose speakers are socially or politically marginalized in the communities
where they are spoken
- A seat to represent scholars whose work directly reflects and addresses
feminist issues/concerns
