Hi everybody,
We are trying to organize a panel for this year's American Anthropological
Association meeting.
We want to do it on masculinity and I was wondering if there are people in
this list that would be interested in submitting a paper with us on this
argument.
The panel will address the performance of masculinity, as well as the
"consumption"
aspect of the performance itself.
We would also like to deal with different cross-cutting themes, like
masculinity and whiteness, gender, class, etc. In terms of the meeting
theme, "the public face of anthropology," we were thinking of doing something
like a) addressing the relative lack of studies on masculinity in
anthropology vis-a-vis other social sciences, 2) an analysis of how
anthropology can speak to current popular debates about masculinity, or 3)
discussing the difficulty of addressing masculinity itself. The panel would
include linguistic anthropologists as well as cultural anthropologists.
So far there are three of us in this panel. Cynthia Strathman, a cultural
anthropologist working on sport and images of maleness in Australia. Jack
Sidnell, who works on male identity in Guyana. And me (I would propose a
work on verbal art performances and construction of gender identities in
Tuscany, Italy). If you are interested, e-mail me at vpagliai at ucla.edu
