Hank Rogers is right that my initial proposal has some problems (some of
which Caroline Henton pointed out), though I still think that a certain kind
of "straight" masculinity is conveyed through controlling pitch
fluctuations.  But matters are certainly more complicated, and Rudy Gaudio's
research shows that the picture isn't nearly as neat as I'd once thought.
