To follow up on Miriam's posting:  Adam Kuper, in Culture: The
Anthropologists' Perspective, Chapter 1, has a very interesting discussion
of the various connotations of the terms "culture," (German) "Kultur" and
"Bildung," (French) "civilisation," etc., tied to the intellectual (and
political) histories in each location.  The terms mean very different
things for different contexts and at different times in history, and a
single term in a single language, such as English "culture," means
radically different things in places like South Africa.  I highly recommend
the chapter.
