For an overview of research, you might have a look at my Review Article: 'Issues of language and gender in second and foreign language education'. It's in the journal 'Language Teaching' 33/4, Oct. 2000, p. 203-223; a large part of the article is the Bibliography, which should contain references to what you are interested in.
