Introducing Feminist Conversation Analysis
19 February 2008

Professor Celia Kitzinger & Dr Merran Toerien
Department of Sociology, University of York, UK

Conversation analysis (CA) is increasingly widely used as a research
methodology to
study genders, sexualities, power, oppression, and other feminist issues.
We have used it to
improve counseling interactions with women in distress after childbirth, to
explore ‘emotion
work’ in a beauty salon, and to study lesbian experiences of ‘coming out’.
Feminist CA is
interdisciplinary, spanning psychology, sociology, linguistics, medicine,
and other related
disciplines.

We are offering a one-day introduction to feminist conversation analysis.
It is suitable
for anyone with feminist (or other related political) commitments but with
no (or only very
limited) previous experience with conversation analysis. If you are
interested in finding out
what conversation analysis may have to offer you in your own doctoral or
post-doctoral
research, this is the course for you.

The course will be limited to no more than 15 people who will work
intensively with the
two tutors. We will include short talks about our own research, some data
analysis
sessions, a practical small-group exercise, and a question and answer
period.
This one-day course will equip you to make an informed decision about
whether or not
conversation analysis is a suitable method for you and will give you some
initial exposure
to what it involves.

The course fee is £65 for the day (10am - 5.30pm). This includes course
materials, a
course reader, a Certificate of Attendance, tea, coffee and lunch. An
informal dinner at an
inexpensive local (vegetarian-friendly) restaurant will be arranged
afterwards for anyone who
would like to join us. The cost of this evening meal will be approximately
£15 and will be
payable on the evening. Details of the program will be confirmed closer to
the time.
The deadline for registration is 4th February 2008 but early registration
is recommended since
the course is likely to be over-subscribed.

The University of York offers bed and breakfast accommodation on campus at
reasonable rates. This can be booked either on-line or by telephone.
