looking for articles on social history of shoes

i remember reading several articles in the past about how social
attitudes towards gender and sexuality (especially the feminine) are
reflected in the shoe fashions of the time. perhaps the most extreme
example being the foot-binding era in china, which 'allowed' women to
wear extremely small shoes and walk in a particular way.

i believe that the rest of the local and contemporaneous clothing
trends and conventions are also a part of the whole story, but for
the moment i'm considering shoe form to be indicative.

anyway, if anyone has any tips or pointers to discussions on this
matter, i'd be very pleased to receive them.

thanks,

lexie
