(A) IGALA INTERNATIONAL BURSARIES: CALL FOR APPLICATIONS (for non-US-based scholars)

The International Gender and Language Association (IGALA) is pleased to be able to offer a limited number of bursaries for scholars attending and presenting a paper or a poster at the IGALA 7 Conference at Unisinos, São Leopoldo, Brazil, June 20-22, 2012.

ELIGIBILITY: IGALA bursaries are aimed at non-US-based scholars only. (US-based scholars should send applications to the IGALA NSF travel grants instead, announced below).

SELECTION CRITERIA: Bursaries will be determined on the basis of financial need, merit of the abstract, and the applicant’s potential benefit from attending. Brazilian presenters may also apply. Preference will be given to participants coming from economically disadvantaged countries, students, and junior scholars and to participants who demonstrate creativity in meeting much of the cost from other sources. For IGALA7, one bursary will be allocated to an African presenter (who may or may not be currently studying/working in Africa).

SELECTION PROCESS: Please submit the following documents (all in English) to the IGALA Bursaries Chair, Michelle Lazar, at <ellmml at nus.edu.sg>, with the email subject header: “IGALA International Bursaries”:

(1) a one-page letter stating the amount requested *in Brazilian reais* and a detailed budget (e.g., airfare, ground transportation, local accommodation). Currency conversion site (suggested): http://www.oanda.com/currency/converter/

(2) a one-page statement from an academic supervisor or head of department explaining why the applicant would benefit from attending the conference, and why the applicant’s institution and/or country of residence is not able to provide funding to attend the conference.

(3) a copy of the abstract (including title) accepted to be presented at IGALA 7.

NOTE: Individuals who are not affiliated with an academic institution at the time of application may submit a short statement explaining their funding situation, and outlining how they would benefit from attending the conference.

DEADLINE: Applications for bursaries for IGALA 7 must be received by March 7, 2012.

RESULTS: A committee of IGALA executive members will decide on the applications and will notify successful applicants by March 23, 2012.

SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS: Successful applicants are required to submit all receipts to the application committee upon attending the conference. Money will be handed over at the conference only, not before.

(B) IGALA 7 US-BASED GRADUATE STUDENT TRAVEL GRANTS: CALL FOR APPLICATIONS (for travel for US-based graduate students and postdoctoral scholars only)

The United States National Science Foundation (NSF) has provided funding to assist US-based graduate students to attend IGALA 7 at Unisinos, São Leopoldo, Brazil, June 20-22, 2012. We strongly encourage US-based faculty to inform their graduate students of this funding opportunity.

Note that these bursaries are strictly aimed at US-based graduate students. (Non-US-based graduate students and scholars should send applications to the IGALA International Bursaries instead, announced in above.)

ELIGIBILITY: Administered through University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), awards are primarily aimed at US-based graduate students. US-based postdoctoral scholars who have earned their Ph.D. in the past three years and who do not hold a tenure-track job at the time of application will also be considered for support if funds permit. Applicants do not need to be US citizens but must be currently or recently affiliated with a US university.

SELECTION CRITERIA: Bursaries will be determined on the basis of financial need, merit of the abstract, and the applicant’s potential benefit from attending.

SELECTION PROCESS: Please submit the following documents to the NSF Awards Chair, Mary Bucholtz, at <bucholtz at linguistics.ucsb.edu>, with the email subject header: “IGALA 7 US-Based Scholar Travel Grants”:

(1) a one-page letter that describes the applicant’s research program, how the paper to presented at IGALA 7 fits into that program, and the benefit to the applicant to be gained by attending IGALA 7.

(2) an itemized one-page budget indicating the amount requested *in US dollars* and all expenses related to the conference (e.g., airfare, ground transportation, local accommodations, meals).

(3) a one-page recommendation letter from the applicant’s Ph.D. advisor or head of department that includes an evaluation of the quality of the applicant’s work, an explanation of why the applicant would benefit from attending the conference, and a statement of why the applicant’s institution and/or country of residence is not able to provide funding to attend the conference. Applicants who are not affiliated with an academic institution at the time of application should request a recommendation letter either from their Ph.D. advisor or from a scholar currently affiliated with a US institution who is familiar with their work.

(4) a copy of the abstract (including title) accepted to be presented at IGALA 7.

NSF REQUIREMENT: NSF regulations strictly limit reimbursement to economy-class travel on US flagship carriers or code-share; individual grants will generally not exceed US$2000.

DEADLINE: Applications for bursaries for IGALA 7 US-based Scholar Travel Grants must be received March 7, 2012.

RESULTS: A committee drawn from IGALA Executive/Advisory Board will assess the applications and will notify successful applicants by March 23, 2012.

SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS: Successful applicants are required to retain all travel-related receipts for submission to the application committee; grant recipients will be notified separately regarding the details of submitting documentation for reimbursement.
