Hi All,
I am writing from Women Make Movies, the leading nonprofit distributor of films by and about women. I thought this listervs members would be particularly interested in some exciting feminist film news. WMM is thrilled to announce that Academy Award®-winning documentary SAVING FACE has been nominated for five Emmy® Awards: Best Documentary; Outstanding Science and Technology Programming; Outstanding Research; Outstanding Cinematography: Documentary and Long Form; Outstanding Editing: Documentary and Long Form. No other documentary this year has been more honored with nominations!
A moving and inspirational film, SAVING FACE profiles the courageous journeys of female acid attack victims in Pakistan and plastic surgeon Dr. Mohammad Jawad, who returned to his home country to assist them. Directed by American filmmaker Daniel Junge (IRON LADIES OF LIBERIA) and Pakistani director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, SAVING FACE is an intimate look inside Pakistani society, illuminating each woman's personal experience and showing a different face of a country so often in the headlines.
Since its release, SAVING FACE has screened as a key media component of hundreds of lesson plans and community programs around the world. Many esteemed academic programs have already incorporated the film into their curriculums, including Harvard University, NYU, Brown University, Smith College, Duke University, Tulane University, York University and Stanford University. In March, the documentary joined an esteemed panel on Ending Violence Against Women at Albany Law School <http://www.albanylaw.edu/about/news/current/Pages/Saving-Face-Documentary-Screening-and-Panel.aspx>. SAVING FACE plays an integral role in spurring dialog around such crucial academic and social issues as Violence Against Women, South Asian Studies, Womens Studies, Social Justice and Community Studies, Medical Justice, International Law and Women in Islam.
