Hi all,
I've been doing some work on the use of 'literally' in American English and
have been interested in its use to index a particular type of white
femininity, what's usually referred to as a 'basic (white) girl' (Wikipedia
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_bitch>). I'd like to put out a call for
suggestions on either:
- Scholarship in sociolinguistics (or beyond) that's either addressed the
use and rise of the term 'basic' applied to a feminine subject, or that
discusses linguistic or other semiotic practices that index similar
constructs of white femininity. Anything discussing the word's shift from
Hip Hop Nation Language to more mainstream use is especially appreciated.
- Any interesting and popular examples from media that indexes 'basic
(white) girls', 'basic bitches', and similar ideological constructions of
this type of white, mid-to-upper-classed femininity. I've started a
collection, but looking to add to it!
Thanks very much in advance,
Josh
