In June 2026, the University of Birmingham placed me and four other colleagues, specialists in Arabic, Chinese, and Italian (and two of us doing research on feminist translation), at risk of compulsory redundancy after announcing the closure of the MA in Translation and the MA in English-Chinese Interpreting. This is a University whose Vice-Chancellor told the British Academy SHAPE conference on 4 March that the closure of language courses across the country is “a national catastrophe”.
