Gmc. *gastiz gives rise to Go. gasts. If the -i- of the Gmc. form were yet
in some way present to the transcriber, whether by an archaic nominative or
inference/influence of the oblique forms, then "gastes" /gas'te:s/ might not
be so unthinkable and would furthermore add to the support of the attested
gasts (i-stem) over against *gaists (? a-stem).

Analysis of the L-S Greek lexicon (middle liddel) gives me little aid. The
closest we come is gastr-, gaste'r "belly, paunch; glutton;" but for lack of
'r' a meaning of "high (i.e. big) belly" must be doubtful. If Greek, there
may be some relation to aga- drive, lead.
