I'm prepared to set up and administer a Germanic History and
Archaeology mailing list via e-groups.com. I'm proposing for the
group to be as follows:
Scope: Discussion of the history, culture, archaeology and source
material relating to the early Germanic peoples from Prehistory to
circa 800 AD.
Moderation: The proposed list will be unmoderated and open to any
and all membership. The administrator will have the task of ensuring
members stick to accepted netiquette however and abusive, offensive,
racist or otherwise disruptive posters will run the risk of exclusion.
Home page: The administrator will establish and maintain a homepage
for the list, which will include access to the list archives, a
collection of featured posts, articles and book reviews, links to
other Germanic history resources and other material or features
suggested by the list members. This page will be submitted to
appropriate search engines and webrings to ensure growth in
membership.

Language: Posts to the list will primarily be in English, but
contributions in other languages will be welcome.
Name: Need some help here - Germanic-L? EarlyGermanic-L?
EarlyGermans-L? Germania-L? Suggestions welcome.
Of course, if no-one is interested I won't bother, but I think the
way Gothic-L has moved from purely Gothic linguistics to Gothic
history and now to broader discussions about the early Germanic
peoples shows that there is a need for such a list. I don't think it
will be to the detriment of Gothic-L in any way and I'm sure most
prospective interested members would stay members of and contributors
to both lists."
Tim,
Think a vote of thanks is in order for your
generous offer to administer a list on Early
Germanic History. My suggestion for name
is exactly that: Early Germanic History-L.
It has been very kind of the Gothic-L
administrators to allow discussions on
Germanic history on the list but in honesty
it is a language list and should be
open mainly for language and Gothic
history. Personally, I will of course remain
on the Gothic list and would gladly subscribe
to the new list. But a success of an Early Germanic
History list depends on a wide subscription.
Many, I am sure, from the old ONN-list would
be interested. My question is: how can we
sell subscriptions to this new list? Can we
advertise on the other lists?
All the best and thanks
Bertil
