It is common knowledge in Scandinavia.

Chazarien und Bulgar
Interessanter sind vielleicht die regelmäßigen Reisen der Nordleute in die
Hauptstadt der Chazaren an der unteren Wolga und in die Stadt Bulgar im
Land der Wolgabulgaren im Gebiet der Mündung des Kama in denselben Fluß. An
beiden Orten war der muslimische Einfluß sehr stark. In Chazarien waren der
Khagan und der Adel zum Judentum übergetreten, aber es gab dort auch
Moslems. Der Emir der Wolgabulgaren war vor dem Jahr 922 zum Islam
übergetreten.
Dies waren die beiden wichtigsten Knotenpunkte für die arabischen
Handelswege. Die wichtigsten importierten Handelswaren auf diesen Märkten
waren Pelze, Sklaven und Waffen. Ibn Rustah und Ibn Haukal zufolge
lieferten die Rus die beiden erstgenannten nach Chazarien und Bulgar. Ibn
Rustah und Gurdesi geben an, daß sich die Nordleute weigerten, etwas
anderes als klingende Silbermünzen für ihre Waren anzunehmen.
