I don't know the specifics of this situation, but let me point out that a w >
gw change, sometimes followed by gw > g is not uncommon, especially when it
comes to things like Romance representations of Germanic words (cf. French
Guerre, garrou from Germanic *werra, *werwulf), possibly due at least in part
to the fact that the Romance languages had lost the phoneme /w/, and the
closest remaining sound was the [gw] combination. I know Welsh also changes
initial w-'s to gw-'s, at least in pausa.
But again, I don't know the specifics here... if anyone can provide
better information on the etyma of these words, please do.
