Of the various look-alike words between Romance languages and Gothic, how many
are specifically Gothic, rather than merely Germanic and could also be from
the languages of the Franks or Lombards or Burgunds etc?
There seem to me to be these ways that a Gothic or other Germanic word could
have got into Romance languages:-
(1) From Germans (mercenary soldiers etc) while the Western Roman Empire
still endured, and they got into general Vulgar Latin, and were spread as
Latin words while the natives of the various provinces gradually forgot their
old languages and learned Vulgar Latin.
(2) After the barbarian invasions, from the new rulers of each part of the
former Roman Empire.
For the loan-words that are reasonably clearly specifically Gothic, do any
cast any light on how the Gothic vowels a'u au' au a'i ai' ai were pronounced?
