Dear Bertil,
history has gone further somewhat since the time of Gibbon and you
will find the lates standard in my article I quoted some mails ago or,
with a slightly different view and some small deviations from my
interpretation in datation, in Wolfram's book on the Goth or in Macej
Salamon's article in Eos 1971. There are no dates in the fragments
of Dexippus's Skythika, in Jordanes and nearly none in Zosimus,
and the latter two wrote in the sixth century. So it is hard going even
for a specialist in the period to sort out the events and to date the
different raids and attacks between 238 and 270 AD, and to
combine the historiographical with the archeological and
epigraphical material. If you do this methodically, you will find, f.i.,
that the Herul sea attack started in 268, not in 267 AD. So don't trust
Gibbon too much, we have a lot more data especially from
archeology today than he had. I shall send you a copy of my article,
if you provide me by direct email with an address to send it to.
Regards
