Subject: Greetings and Gepids
Hello to everyone:
My name is Steve O'Brien and my interest in things Gothic dates from my
study
of that language under Terry Wilbur at UCLA in the seventies(!). Finding
this list was a stroke of luck and I've enjoyed the posts that I've seen so
far.
In addition to my general interest, I've also come with a question or, more
accurately, questions about the Gepids.
1) I would appreciate it if someone could steer me to the classical sources
which mention them.
2) Is there an accepted etymology for the term itself? I have read the
claim
that it stems from the Gothic term Gepanti, meaning stupid, but can find no
such root in my sources (I have Bennet's Introduction, Wright's Grammar, and
Streitberg's Die Gotische Bibel), nor does it look particularly gothic
(gibanda?) to me.
Many thanks in advance and I look forward to more interesting posts.
Rgds,
Steve O'Brien
