Dear listmembers,
Having always been fascinated in what might
well be the oldest Germanic literature existing
I would like to take a look at the Battle of the
Goths and the Huns in the Saga of King Heidrek
the Wise, in Scandinavia known as the Hervarar-
saga.
Starting with strophe 77:
"Hlodhr rode from the east,
heir of Heidhrekr;
he came to the court,
the homes of the Goths,
to Arheimar,
claiming his birthright;
there drank Angantyr
arval for Heidhrekr."
Hlodhr = a destroyer, vanquisher
Heidrekr=the king of the heath (ON)
Arheimar=water terrain, could be anywhere
Angantyr=Joy/Happiness Tyr (ON Angan Tyr),
in the poem in his role as Gothic hero
arval=?
There are six parts of the saga with part 5
dealing with the story of Angantyr and Hlodhr
and the poetic Batlle of the Goths and the Huns.
Gothically
Bertil
"The Goths and the Eruls can be regarded not only
as the predecessors but also the models of the
Vikings."
Based on a text of professor Omeljan Pritsak
