Good point. But I still don't think we can rule out Grimm's idea
(regardless of what his motives and methods may or may not have been) that
Gaut could have been a _corruption_ rather than an actual incorrectly
written letter, or scribal error: Given the connection between u and v,
then v, f, and p, if Gaut was somewhere written "Gavt," it could have very
easily been mistaken by an unknowing writer as Gaft, or Gapt. This
speculative explanation seems just as probable, or perhaps a bit more
probable, than assuming Gapt to be connected with Giban or Gibika.
