Esteemed listmembers,

Had the opportunity to take a look
at Professor Anderson's article
in Hoops on the goetar/
Gauts/gautoi (vol.12, 1998). I think he went
further than before in Hoops in asserting the
connection goetar, Goths, gutar, than
in any earlier contributions of his on the
subject.

Professor Anderson refers to Procopius' mentioning
of gautoi to assert the existence in classical literature
of the goetar/Gauts in the 6th century AD. No doubt,
he wrote in 1998, Gauthigoth(ae) and
Ostrogothae refer to the inhabitants
of Vaestergoetland and Oestergoetland.
The three peoples goetar, Goths, and
gutar were settled in the Baltic Sea
area, where the water was a combining
element. This creats the background for
the assumption that there is a connection.

Further Professor Anderson claims that
there is a unanimous consent within
research today the goetar, Goths, and gutar
are related to *geutan (giessen, to pour).
I was even surprised to read his
words an other theories: Other theories
do not need to be treated here.

Gothically

Bertil
