Hails!
Just a minor addendum to Francisc's quite exhaustive list of
Old Gutnish peculiarities:
>2. a triphthong has arisen by change of "iu" into "iau", e.g. fliauga
>"to fly" (you will never find such a thing in Gothic!);
Neither can the change be considered as a distinguishing feature of
Old Gutnish. It may also be observed in Finnish loanwords and Norse
inscriptions showing that its distribution was not restricted to
Gotland during the Runic Norse age. Some scholars maintain that the
development iu > iOu (O is "o caudata") is a common North Germanic
change, others prefer thinking of a dialectal feature which later
receded from the mainland.
