Esteemed listmembers,

Dr. Heyerdahl's project is probably only the first
that will tackle the interesting question of many
outstanding problems: the relation of the Gutar with
the Crimean Goths, the origin of the Aesir in Caucasus, the Eruli settlements around the Sea of Azov, the Goths on the
Black Sea in general and of course the possible origin of the runes in these areas. Outside help with a strong economic base for research is needed and Dr. Heyerdahl is providing that with his team of Norwegians.

Doing research in place is important here, and instead of speculations to create a new corpus of facts on these
matters. One of the sources here is of course the sagas and particularly the Ynglinga Saga and the Guta Saga, which so clearly establish links between Scandinavia, Caucasus and the Azov regions. The basic facts of Dr. Heyerdahls research so far has been presented here and maybe it is time to take a look at the Guta Saga as well. The sagas as sources have been underrated but Dr. Heyerdahl and other researchers are planning to look at the whole picture: lingustic, archaelogical, historic etc. When the research is presented it can be evaluated and for all interested in the Goths both "Odin in Azov" and other projects should be welcomed including the Azeri links to the Aesir.

The fame of Dr. Heyerdahl has contributed to a media attention that research on the East Germanic peoples and Scandinavia can only benefit from.

Gothically
