Nothing negative on the dead but I don't think Professor
Ingemar Olsson's theories on the origin of the name
Gutland can hold. He wrote in his book "Gotlaendska ortnamn"
att man maaste fortsaetta att forska om namnet Gutland (he wrote
of course Gotland) daerfoer att det inte var klart, tyckte han,
att Gutland kunde relateras till goterna och saa foersoeker han dra
slutsatser av vissa gotlaendska ortsnamn, som skulle peka paa en
anknytning till vattenfloede (water flow). Well, his attempt is as
good as any but he admits he is not sure.

Professor Elias Wessén, the renowned linguist, noted that Wulfstan
was the first to mention Gutland (Gotland). Around 1200 in _Historia
Norwegiae_ "Gotorum insulam et eynorum (referring to Oeland).
Runish "a kutlanti" or "af kutlanti.

Professor Wessén also mentions that Scandza, that is Scandia, is a
shortened version of Scandinavia, older Scadinavia, an original
form for Skaane (Scania).
