Hello Andreas,

if I had seen your message earlier that would have saved me writing 
the previous reply to Bertil. However, I must admit that I didn't know 
that the Sarmatians were still in areas from Pannonia to the Black Sea 
as late as the 470sAD. I thought it was basically only Gepids and 
Goths who occupied - at least the Pannonia region - at that time. I 
suppose that tells us a lot about the conception (or rather 
mis-conception) of more or less ethnically 'pure' settlement areas, 
which seems to promote the view that one group always displaces an 
earlier group.  I would not even be surprised if many of these 
defeated Sarmatians after 470AD either intergrated into a local 
population or became Goths themselves.
