I have read Arthur Koestler's book, "The thirteenth tribe". It is well
documented and not fictional at all. His theory states basicly that
most East-European Jews are not descendants of the ancient Hebrews,
but of the Khazars, a Turkic-speaking nomad people that established an
empire in the early Middle-Age north of Caucasus and adopted Judaism
as an official religion (the single case in history that a non-Hebrew
people adopted Judaism). He brings many arguments in favor of his
hypothesis, but the fact that East-European Jews are speaking a
Germanic language - Yiddish - is hard to explain. In this context he
invokes the possibility that Crimean Gothic could influence in some
way the formation of Yiddish, bringing the argument, already quoted on
this list, that the language of the Crimean Goths was easily
understood by German merchants.
