Dear listmembers,
In a May 1999 article in the North-Western European Language
Evolution Cor van Bree reflects on the strange simplicity of Gothic
and notes:
"When the climate in Scandinavia worsened around 500 BC,
a massive migration to more southern regions began."
Gothic, so van Bree reflects the change. In fact, the Goths
had left at an early stage and embarked on a long route
through the eastern parts of Europe.
Van Bree also relates the translation of Van Coetsem of
the famous Danish Gallehus runic inscription (the Golden
Horn) from around 400 AD and compares it to Gothic:
Gallehus
ek hlewagastiR holtijaR horna tawido
Gothic
*ik Hliugasts Hulteis haurn tawida
Translation
I, Hlewagast, Holt's son, made the horn
Van Bree mentions the interaction between the Goths
and non-Germanic tribes: Indo-Europeans such as
the Iranian Alans: the Scythians, who were related
to the Alans; and even non-Indo-Europeans, such as the
Finno Ugrian Estonians. The last info was new to me.
Gothically
Bertil
