Hi

I do not have much to add to my already too voluminous web-site
except that the section you have brought quotes from contain
different scenarios and a lot of reservations - clearly seperated
from the chapters discussing history and archaeology. The
listmembers, who claim that Snorre as a Christian deliberately tried
to describe Odin as a man, could in my opinion be right, but they can
not be as sure as they pretend. He did not construct these myths
himself as much of the information was found in earlier poems - and
he knew more than we do. I think his description contain elements of
one or two religions (it is generally accepted due to archaeology
that the religion had changed in Scandinavia since the Bronce Ages)
but also some fragments of history. He probably mixed some of the
elements himself, earlier authors did the same, and some dynasties
back in time may have misused the religion in order to secure their
own power. At some of these stages history could be combined in order
to connect a dynasty with the religion or to explain the religion as
human history. I am primarily using this in order to find
explanations regarding historical and archaeological fragments - and
I am still searching. It is not my purpose to explain or intention to
offend the basical religion behind.

I have no special opinion about the Gokturk alphabeth as such an
origin of the runes would not change what I am working with.

If you have specific questions regarding my web-site I will of course
answer you, but I am afraid we are going to leave the topic of this
list. You are welcome to mail me directly or maybe to use Germanic
List.
