The events that led to the fall of the west
Roman empire was interrupted by the
a Hunnic invasion. The Huns had appeared
in Europe in the middle of the Fourth Century AD.
The Ostrogoths were subjected, som fled to the west.
In 395 AD the core area of the Huns was still
between the lower Don and the Volga. Five years
later there was a Hunnic presence on the Danube.
Until 420 AD the bulk oft he Huns moved to
Pannonia.

In 405/406 AD the Huns under Uldin crossed
the Danube and moved into Pannonia where the
Ostrogoths were settled. The Huns crossed the
Rhine eventually and attacked northern Gaul.
Here dwindling Roman army forces under Aetius.
Attila sought the cooperation of the Visigoths now
ruled by King Theoderid II (419-451 AD). But the
Visigoths eventually joined Aetius and fought
with the Roman army in northern Gaul against
Attila's Huns, Ostrogoths and Alans. In the battle
Attila had to withdraw to his defense line of waggons
and the Visigoths wanted to finish him. But Aetius
held them back. He was afraid that the Visigoths would
be too powerful if they completely defeated Attila.
Aetius managed to persuade the Visigoths to let
Attila get away. The Huns retreated and Attila invaded
Italy but he was forced by an outbreak of pestilence
to retreat. He died in 453 AD and hiss on and heir Ellak
did not manage to keep the Hunic empire intact. The
Ostrogoths managed to free themselves.
