[gothic-l] New Scandinavian Writing on the Eruli

At this point it might be of interest to note modern
Scandinavian writings on the Eruli. Some of it has
probably during the years been mentioned on the
list but for newcomers it might be of interest
with a short review. Tore In his excellent
books _The Origin of Svear_ and _Gotland Oester-
sjoens paerla_ in detail presents how the
arrival of the Eruli coincides with the flourishing
Svea culture in Uppland. And he draws his
conclusions.

Of interest is also Professor Alvar Ellegaard "Who
Were the Eruli?" in the journal Scandia, Vol. 53:1,
1987. Personally I do not agree with Professor
Ellegaard's conclusion that the Eruli were a roving
band of Germanic warriors and not a people but the
extensive article contains much of interest regarding the Eruli.

In an article more for popular consumption Professor
Lars Hermodsson (No2/1995, Populaer historia)
published an article on the Eruli ("Herulerna - vittfarna
vildar med nordiskt ursprung").

For the German and English reading there are the
detailed and scholarly articles of Marvin Taylor.

The conclusion ought to be that there in modern time
is quite interest in the Eruli in Scandinavia and one can
only hope that Tore will continue to explore the angle
on tthe Eruli presented in his earlier books. Although
there has been some writing on the Eruli on the
Black Sea elsewhere Scandinavia ought to be
central in research on the Eruli.
