Hi Philippe,

is there any evidence that Gothic survived until the mid-9th century
in southern France? I would be very sceptical about that. I think
even in the Visigothic kingdom in Spain, Gothic died out in the
course of the 6th/7th century. The so called 'table of nations'
refers to the Visigoths as 'Valagoths', meaning the Romanic-speaking
Goths.

On the other hand, it could be possible that isolated pockets
continued to speak Gothic for a much longer period of time. For
example the area of Bayeux in northern France was still
called 'otlingua Saxonis' in the 9th century. According to Ammianus
Marcellinus, these Saxons had arrived in the 4th century, and were
recorded by several authors over the centuries.

cheers
Dirk
