It is only natural that the legends of the Visigoths are
remaining on the Iberian Peninsula, both in Spain
and Portugal. One can only refer to the statues
of the Visgothic kings outside the Royal Palace in
Madrid to be reminded of the interest in the
Visigoths.
Tradition recalls that in 718 AD Pelayo is believed
to have defeated a Muslim force at Covadonga. He was
elected later, according to tradition, the first King of
Asturia-Leon.
These traditions are for instance preserved in the Albelda
Chronicle. Others are Chronica de Alfonso III and the relation
to the capital of Asturia, Oviedo, seems to exist. It is said
that Alfonso II (who died in 842) "restored the Gothic
order, as it was in Toledo." The Albelda Chronicle sees
Spain as still being "regnum gothorum", but also partly
occupied by the Saracens.
In Historia Silense, a chronicle of the court in Leon
from around 1115, an unknown author claims to want
to describe the life and history of Alfonso VI (who died in
1109). Leon had a new dynasty after the last king
of the old dynasty had fallen in battle
in 1037. The progenitor is according to the chronicle
the Visigothic king Reccared.
Also Garsias of Navarra is believed to be "ex Recaredi serenissimi
Gotorum principis progenie ortus."
