When Rodrigo's history was published the idea of a Spanish
kingdom based on the traditional Visgothic kingdom seemed
nearer than ever. In 1469, when Rodrigo completed his history
Isabella, sister of Henry IV and his successor, created the
base for Spanish unity by choosing Ferdinand, king of Aragon,
as consort.
There are expressions of the time that this was seen in the
light of Visgothic tradition and full resoration of the Visigothic
monarchy.
So for instance by the famous Castilian history writer Mosén
Diego de Valera (1412-1488), majordomus and counsellor of
Isabella and Ferdinand. In one letter he wrote that by the union
of Castile and Aragon Spain had returned to the advantage
it held over France in the Visigothic era. The same thinking can be
found in Doctrinal de Principes from the 1470s.
