That's how it is. Thought it was interesting. The TV series,
had a number of scholars advising among them Herwig
Wolfram, the Austrian professor.
What guest workers would that be. Ostrogoths?
After all it is stated in the program that the Goths
migrated from Scandinavia. Of course it can
never be satisfactorly concluded if the Goths
came from anywhere else. Once upon a time
it was a small people - likely migrating from
southern Scandinavia. The name could mean
just "men". It stepped onto the stage of history
when the Romans had started to attempt to
include Germania into the empire. In those days
the Goths had embarked and already lived in
Gothiscandza. Some archaelogists equate the
earliest history of the Goths with some artifacts
named after the East Prussian town Willenberg.
It is even disputed whether the Goths reached the
river Oder. But the Amal saga, for instance, assured
a Scandinavian origin. For Germanic standards
the Gothic kings had an unusual amount of authority,
very close actually to the authority of Scandinavian
classical kings.
The Gothic people, some claim, even included the
Vandals, the Gepids, Rugians, Sciri, and Burgundians
not to speak of the Alans. The common faith and the
lex Gothica were what held them together.
The Amal Origo Gothica limited the number of Gothic
peoples, however, to Ostrogoths, Visigoths, and Gepids,
who later broke away.
To some extent, I think, Ptolemy is especially important as
he recognized the Guti on the island Scandia.
