though they also had Iranic and probably Ugrian
symbiots. Their empire emerged in the mid-7th c. and
lasted for over 300 years. Your feeling that they may
have been Semitic is probably due to the fact that
their leaders (and some though not all ordinary
folk)converted to Judaism in the 8th century. The
capital of their state was at Itil on the Volga. At
the height of their power (ca. 800) they controlled
(directly or through allied vassals) most of European
Russia and much of Ukraine. The Crimean Goths were
their subjects also.*****
