Unfortunately I don't read Swedish.
Thank you nevertheless for your remark and reference.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

No doubt that Dyna (contemp. West Dvina) with Dnepr
comprised a shortest and easiest "river" path from
the Black sea to the Baltic sea (and of course vice versa).
However, there were some meteorological periods when
another path became convenient as well. When climate
dampness grew on the Russian plain (e.g. on the edge 7-8 cc.),
the former Ivan-ozero (John-lake), the source of Shat-river
in the Oka-Volga's basin, shed waters into Don in springs
and during rainy summers. The same phenomenon connected
the Volga's upper course with Lake Onega through Beloye ozero
(White lake). Finally, all this created a continuous
(without portages) path:
  Azov - Don - Ivan-ozero - Shat - Oka - Volga - Beloye ozero -
Svir - Lake Onega - Svir - Ladoga - Neva - Gulf of Finland, etc.
As if intentionally for our Heruls!

Vladimir

Vladimir,
In the Gotlandic chronicle they talk about the river dyna (Düna) for
their travel to Greece.

If you could read Swedish there is a good study of the Gotlandic
together with Svear push into the Russian river 7th and 8th century.
